On the western slopes of the central hills lies Strathspey Estate, which stretches from across the foothills of Srilanka’s legendary mountain and world famous “Adams peak”, from the borders of the protected wilderness across the undulating gradients. It’s some 160 Km’s from Colombo by road and is located in the well- known tea growing region of Upcot (Nissanka Uyana) that comes within the purview of the Nuwara-Eliya District.
The location is unique in that many streams originate / traverse through the luscious tea garden. It has an abundant and complex life system of rich bio diversity that serves to make it a place of extra ordinary scenic beauty – a nature lover’s paradise
The estate comes in to the high grown elevation category with the factory situated 1300 meters above mean sea level.
Strathspey was originally planted belonged to M/s. T.A. Robertson and D.D.A. Robertson. Subsequently Rayigam (Cey) Ltd., Tea Company bought the property from their original owners, and planted with tea.
Later on M/s. George Steuart Tea Company bought the estate and managed until the estates were nationalized in 1975 and brought under the management of the Sri Lanka state plantation corporation process of re-privatization that it was brought under the management of Maskeliya Plantations Limited on 22nd June 1992.
Strathspey consists of six divisions at present, namely Cleveland, Ormidale, Strathspey, Annandale, Minna and Ladbroke, which were separate estates having individual factories long ago , and later amalgamated.
Some of the long standing Superintendents of Strathspey have been Mr.Henry Cosens who’s tenure in office expanded over 15 years from 1931 to 1946, Mr. Ralph Welscott, was in-charge for over 8 years from 1946 to 1953 and Mr. John Holland from 1958 to 1969. The last foreigner who managed the estate was Mr. George Alston
The present tea-processing factory was built in 1927 and the new office complex in 1987. The new Superintendents bungalow was built in 1965, which was designed by the famous architect Jefferey Bawa
Strathspey has a reputation for producing high quality teas and has won worldwide recognition in this area.
Strathspey produces around 1mn Kgs of black tea per annum for the export market.
The estate factory has progressed tremendously since then to be bestowed in the years following the year 2001 with coveted and prestigious awards as detailed here below, in reorganization of the commitment and dedication of its employees and the proper direction and guidance being provided to them.
